Fall Of Man Taps PS3’s Power

The holidays arrived early for gamers this year as Sony launched its PlayStation 3 console, along with what might be the PS3’s first killer app: Resistance: Fall of Man, a first-person shooter that takes pace in an alternate 1950s in which a hostile alien race called the Chimera have swept across Eastern Europe.Developed by Insomniac Games (Ratchet & Clank), Resistance: Fall of Man taps into the power of the next-generation PS3, Ted Price, president and chief executive officer of Insomniac, told SCI FI Wire. “The PS3 is significantly more powerful than any other console we’ve designed for,” Price said in an interview. “And as a result we can do a lot more with our game. With Resistance, you can see it in the weapon design, the physics, the lighting. Everything goes into creating an immersive game with a more believable reality than we’ve been able to achieve before.”

Resistance: Fall of Man follows Nathan Hale, a soldier who is immune to the Chimera virus that has ravaged the human race. The game takes anywhere from 12 to 16 hours to play through and has three different difficulty levels. One of the highlights of the game is the inventive weapons, all of which feature an “alt-fire” mode, which helps to set Resistance: Fall of Man apart from other first-person shooters. “The weapons are probably my favorite part of the game,” Price said. “They look great, they sound right, and the variety of weapons and the alt-fire really make the combat fun.”

Weapons such as the Bullseye can fire a “tag” that works like a homing beacon for every subsequent shot. The Auger can fire through walls. They all make for intersting gameplay, especially considering the game takes place in the 1950s. “Since we’re rewriting our own history, we felt like we could create whatever kinds of weapons for the game [that we wanted], which makes Resistance different than every other typical World War II game out there,” Price said. Resistance: Fall of Man is available now exclusively for the PlayStation 3.
