Thousands stolen while man showed house upstairs

Scam artists played a costly game of distraction, and a Kent homeowner lost thousands of dollars. His property was stolen out from under him while he was still in the house.

“Knocked on the door. It was very innocent,” Tom Carmichael said of the woman who stopped by. She said “can I take a quick peek at the house?”

With that Tom Carmichael unknowingly let a scam artist walk into his house Monday night. The house is for sale in a neighborhood in Kent with a block watch program, and his home is armed with a security system. But nothing protected him from an unexpected home shopper and a couple’s daring plan.

As he showed the woman his home, someone else slipped into the house. “It just struck me as odd that it was taking this long to look around the room, and then there was a knock on the door which was obviously her cue that he had the goods and it was a time to leave,” Carmichael said.

They left with thousands of dollars. “They had gone through my coat, gotten my wallet, stolen an extra set of keys and were gone,” he said. A lighter was found on the front porch after the couple left. Police are now running fingerprints and hope to track that couple down.

Kent police believe tom might not be the only victim, and that a lesson can be learned. “Why is someone knocking on your door suddenly? You should have the business card from realtor handy, give them the business card and ask them to go through your realtor,” police spokesman Paul Petersen said.
