Elbridge residents arrested for setting fire to cat
Two men from the Syracuse area have been arrested for animal abuse after the cat they set on fire touched off a blaze on a parked car.
During the evening of Wednesday December 20th, State Police in Elbridge responded to the Champion Trailer Park for a report of a vehicle fire. Investigation into the incident revealed that a cover on a parked vehicle had been ignited and subsequently extinguished by the Elbridge Fire Department with no damage to the vehicle.
A cat suffering from severe burns was located near the scene and a subsequent investigation revealed that two residents of the trailer park, 20-year-old Dustin M. Gauger and 18-year-old Kyle D. Custer had stolen the cat from a home in the Village of Elbridge and brought it back to the trailer park where they tied the cat up, doused it with gasoline and ignited it.
After being ignited, the cat ran into the car cover setting that on fire and alerting neighbors who called 911.
State Police arrested Gauger and Custer for Petit Larceny and Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. Custer was additionally charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.
Both men were arraigned in the Town of Camillus Court and remanded to the Justice Center on $5,000 cash/$10,000 bond.
