Tory councillor behind new lap dance venue

Pole DancerTORY councillor Kimberley Anderson is celebrating her latest business venture - opening a lap dancing club in Liverpool.

By day the 25-year-old Conservative councillor makes sure people in her ward get their fences mended and helps keep youths off the streets. But by night the Ellesmere Port and Neston politician shows a racier side - as the licencee of three lap dancing clubs.

The Great Sutton entrepreneur, whose family originally come from Netherley, has been working in lap dancing clubs for two years and runs a company which supplies dancers for private parties. Her mother is a Justice of the Peace and she followed her councillor father’s footsteps to become an elected representative for her local community.

But she says her constituents are perfectly happy with the fact their local councillor runs lap dancing clubs. She said: “I know when people think of Conservative women they think of Margaret Thatcher. But no one disapproves. I think it just makes me seem more down to earth and more like a normal person. People do think it’s unusual for a woman to run a lap dancing club, but the dancers trust me more.”

“My mum Diane, who is a JP, comes down sometimes too and has even brought my aunties and uncles with her.” Miss Anderson said after leaving Whitby High School she knew she wanted to work in bars and clubs so took some NVQs and started working as a bouncer in Chester when she was 18. A friend told her about a job running Rude Bar and she said she has never looked back.

Then in May last year her brother, Gareth, the deputy chairman of the local association, encouraged her to run as a councillor. She said: “Where I live everyone sits around complaining saying ‘It’s a disgrace’, but won’t do anything about it. I wanted to put my money where my mouth was. People think local politicians are trying to line their own pockets, but it’s a service to the community.”

Last night, Miss Anderson opened her latest club Privilege, on Whitechapel, where she used to run the Blue Leopard and Rude Bar. Labour councillor Joe O’Rourke, ward member for Cllr Anderson’s own ward of Sutton, said he had not been aware of her line of work. He joked: “She’s not a lap dancer herself is she? Good on her, I think. I don’t think it would in any way affect her ability to act as a councillor.”

“What she does in her own time is entirely a matter for her. I can’t see anything wrong with this.”

“I’ve only met her once, she’s a relatively new councillor, and I’ve only encountered her from seeing her across the council chamber.”

“We councillors in Ellesmere Port are a fairly prosaic lot, we do a range of jobs like teachers, accountants, but this is our first lap dancing licensee.”
